Africa-Press – Uganda. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has confirmed a presidential directive halting the processing of dual citizenship applications for individuals of certain national origins, including Banyarwanda and Sudanese.
Speaking to the media, Ministry spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi revealed that the instruction was issued by President Yoweri Museveni, urging the Ministry to immediately stop processing such applications until further notice.
“We have received a directive from the President to stop handling dual citizenship for specific groups, including Banyarwanda and Sudanese,” said Mundeyi.
The directive is expected to affect hundreds of applicants, many of whom had already submitted the necessary documents and were awaiting feedback.
While the Ministry did not disclose the reasons behind the decision, it comes amidst rising national interest in clarifying citizenship claims, especially ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The Ministry has pledged to communicate further guidance once consultations with the President and other key stakeholders are finalised.
