FORT PORTAL – Three people have sustained serious injuries in an accident involving a bus and Mitsubishi Pajero car along the Fort Portal-Kyenjojo highway.Vincent Twesigye the Rwenzori Regional Police spokesperson says that the accident happened as a driver of a bus registration number UAQ 226W belonging to Pokopoko bus company tried to overtake while in a sharp corner.According to Twesigye, a bus heading to Kampala collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero car number UBB 121S which was approaching Fort Portal.The accident happened about 7KM from Fort Portal town.”It is believed that the driver of the bus was overtaking and it was a sharp turn. He lost control and rammed into the Pajero car injuring 3 of its occupants” Twesigye said.The injured were rushed to the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital Buhinga for treatment.Police warns road usersAbdul Gamal Regional Traffic Officer Rwenzori has cautioned all road users to be responsible while on the road.”Pedestrians, motorists and drivers should all be responsible and respectful while using the road. You must know that you are not the only road user,” Gamal said. Check points mountedGamal disclosed that the police have mounted various checkpoints at different spots to weed out the bad road users.”Motorcycles are not allowed to carry more than one passenger at a time. The carrying of minors on the motorcycle fuel tank is also prohibited,” he said.He has also warned parents against putting minors in the co-drivers’ seats while on the road.The police have also warned against over speeding and careless driving during the festive season.”Avoid overtaking at wrong points like humps, zebra crossing, sharp corner,” he said.He has urged drivers to have their vehicles’ mechanical condition checked before embarking on any journey.”Don’t drive vehicles that are in dangerous Mechanical Condition especially worn out tires, vehicles with faulty brakes, vehicles with damaged lighting system, etc” he said.Covid-19 SOPsGamal has appealed to travelers to adhere to the Covid19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to the dot while on the road.”Wear your mask properly and don’t allow to be overcrowded in a vehicle. As per the Covid19 SOPs, all the vehicles must carry half capacity” he said.He has called for a combined effort between police and the community in fighting crime on the road as well as reducing the number of road accidents.
