IGG Backs Calls for more Funding, Staff at Mulago Mortuary

Africa-Press – Uganda. Deputy Inspector General of Government Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe has backed calls for increased funding and staffing at Mulago National Referral Hospital’s City Mortuary after officials said the facility’s expanding workload is straining existing personnel.

During a spot check at the mortuary, Muhairwe pledged to raise the concerns with the relevant government agencies after hospital officials appealed for additional resources to support the facility’s growing role in forensic services, pathology and medical training.

Senior Consultant Paediatric Surgeon Dr John Sekabira said the mortuary has evolved into a key training centre for pathology students while continuing to handle forensic and clinical cases, significantly increasing its workload and stretching the available workforce.

Director of Police Health Services and Lead Forensic Pathologist AIGP Dr Moses Byaruhanga said recent government investment has improved the timeliness and accuracy of postmortem reports.

However, he said operational challenges remain and revealed that plans are underway to establish an additional mortuary facility and recruit more medical personnel to ease pressure on the existing staff.

Muhairwe, who inspected the facility to assess service delivery, sanitation standards and operational efficiency, commended the improvements made at the mortuary, describing it as clean, orderly and professionally managed despite handling a high volume of cases.

“I commend the staff and administration of the hospital on the great improvement the facility has experienced over time. The job you do is great, though thankless. We see you, we know the hardships you face, and we appreciate that you stay the course despite everything,” she said.

She pledged to escalate the staffing and funding concerns to the relevant authorities, reaffirming the Inspectorate of Government’s commitment to improving public service delivery.

Mulago City Mortuary is Uganda’s national referral mortuary, providing forensic and pathology services while also serving as a training centre for future pathologists.
