Africa-Press – Uganda. Veteran politician Moses Tugume has emerged victorious in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, securing the party’s flag for the Mityana Municipality mayoral race with an overwhelming majority.
Tugume garnered 5,065 votes, representing 69%, defeating his closest rival, Ssenabulya Kakumba, who managed 2,320 votes, accounting for 31%.
The primaries, held on Thursday, were marked by a high voter turnout and intense competition, but Tugume’s commanding victory reflects his strong grassroots support and long-standing influence in Mityana’s political circles.
Speaking moments after being declared the official NRM flag bearer, an elated Tugume described the win as a mandate from the people and a call to serve with renewed commitment.
“This victory is not just mine it is for every resident of Mityana Municipality who believes in our vision for better service delivery and development. I am humbled by the trust you have placed in me,” Tugume noted.
The Mityana District NRM Electoral Commission, while announcing the results, praised the peaceful nature of the elections and urged all candidates to unite behind Tugume as the official party flag bearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“The NRM family in Mityana must now focus on unity and strengthening the party’s position as we prepare for the national elections,” said Richard Kawooya , the Deputy District NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson.
Tugume, a seasoned politician with decades of experience in local governance, has pledged to prioritise infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and improved municipal services if elected in 2026.
His landslide victory positions him as a formidable contender, not just within the NRM but also in the broader political landscape of Mityana.
