Africa-Press – Uganda. Brenda Kiconco, one of the aspirants for the position of National Youth Chairperson on the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee, has embarked on a vigorous mobilisation drive across the Bunyoro sub-region, urging youth delegates to rally behind her candidacy and build a unified front.
Addressing youth delegates in Kabale Sub-county, Kiconco stressed the importance of unity among young people, arguing that only through a cohesive and coordinated voice can the youth influence national policy and effectively push for their inclusion in key decision-making processes.
“Young people have always been central to Uganda’s political processes, yet many times we are used and then sidelined. We need to organise ourselves as one voice, one agenda, and push for meaningful representation,” Kiconco said.
Her campaign message is grounded in the need to tackle the pressing challenges facing youth across the country, including high unemployment rates, limited economic opportunities, and insufficient access to government resources.
“We cannot talk about development when the majority of our young people are unemployed or excluded from major economic programs. If elected, I will prioritise creating platforms for youth to access government empowerment initiatives and amplify their voice at the national table,” she told supporters.
Kiconco also decried what she called the marginalisation of youth voices, saying that despite being the largest demographic in the country, young people are often left out of conversations that affect their future.
“We must change this narrative. We deserve not just to be heard, but to be part of the decisions that shape our country’s future,” she added.
Supporting her message was Gilbert Mugisa, a youth delegate from Kabale Sub-county, who voiced frustration over corruption and nepotism in access to job opportunities.
“Many of us are qualified but remain unemployed because of corruption. Jobs go to those with connections, not those with merit. We need leaders like Brenda who understand these issues and are ready to fight for us,” Mugisa said.
Kiconco’s campaign comes at a critical time as the NRM Youth League prepares to elect new leaders to represent young people at the party’s top decision-making body.
Her emphasis on grassroots mobilisation, youth empowerment, and integrity has gained traction among delegates seeking a fresh, accountable voice.
With the youth vote poised to play a key role in shaping Uganda’s political future, Kiconco says she is committed to turning youthful energy into lasting influence.
“The youth are the heartbeat of this country. We have the numbers. Now we must use them to speak with one voice,” she concluded.
