Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda have written a new chapter in their African Nations Championships journey, climbing to the summit of Group C for the first time ever with a confident 2-0 victory over Niger at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium on Monday night.
The win also marks the Cranes’ first back-to-back CHAN triumphs, pushing them within touching distance of a historic quarter-final spot.
From the opening whistle, Uganda looked in control. Allan Okello opened the scoring in determined fashion — his penalty was saved, but he reacted quickly to head the rebound into the net.
Soon after, Joel Sserunjogi doubled the lead with a composed and clinical finish, sending the home crowd into celebration.
While the goals grabbed the headlines, the foundation of the victory came from a solid defensive display.
Goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa marshalled his backline with authority, helping Uganda secure a second consecutive clean sheet in the tournament.
The result takes Uganda to six points from three matches, ahead of Algeria and South Africa (both on four points with a game in hand). Guinea sit on three points, while Niger remain without a point.
With their destiny firmly in their own hands, the Cranes now turn their attention to a crucial clash with South Africa on August 18.
A win would not only keep them top but also seal their first-ever CHAN quarter-final appearance — a prize that feels closer than ever.
