People’S Power Front Withdraws from 2026 Presidential Race

Africa-Press – Uganda. The People’s Power Front (PPF) has announced that it will not participate in Uganda’s 2026 presidential elections after failing to secure registration as a fully-fledged political party, despite claiming to have met all requirements set by the Electoral Commission.

Instead, the pressure group said it will back its members contesting other elective positions as independents.

In a statement signed by interim secretary Spartan Mukagyi, PPF expressed frustration over what it termed “unfair rejection” of its application, saying its plans to field a presidential candidate had collapsed.

“We wish to formally inform the public, our esteemed members, supporters, and well-wishers that the PPF will not be participating in the forthcoming 2026 General Elections,” the statement read.

Mukagyi criticized the absence of meaningful electoral reforms, describing the elections as “ritualized exercises whose outcome is predetermined.”

He stressed that, for PPF, elections should be “genuine vehicles for democratic expression, grounded in transparency, accountability, and fairness.”

The group cited unresolved reforms recommended by the Supreme Court in the 2016 presidential election petition filed by former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi against President Yoweri Museveni.

These included extending the filing and determination of presidential petitions to 60 days, regulating public officials’ participation in elections, ensuring equal airtime for all candidates, and banning donations during campaigns.

PPF said failure to implement such reforms has weakened the credibility of Uganda’s elections.

Despite withdrawing from the presidential contest, PPF confirmed it would support members contesting parliamentary and local government positions.

“We recognize that some of our members may choose to contest in these elections using the party’s particulars and other identities. We will support them as independents,” spokesperson Amayo Iryn said.

PPF had positioned itself as a strong alternative to President Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule but will now seek to maintain its presence in Uganda’s political landscape outside the presidential race.
