Africa-Press – Uganda. Former presidential candidate Nancy Kalembe has accused officials of the Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) of soliciting bribes in exchange for nomination signatures.

Kalembe claims that certain officials initially demanded Shs20 million, later reducing the amount to Shs14 million.

She says that when she refused to pay and submitted her own signatures, one official became aggressive and disrespectful.

“Shame on Uganda Electoral Commission leaders,” Kalembe said. “Certain officials asked me for Shs20 million to get nomination signatures. They later reduced it to Shs14 million. When I submitted my own signatures without bribing them, one shoved me and called them ‘rubbish.’”

The Nile Post could not independently verify Ms Kalembe’s claims and there was no evidence presented to back them up.

But Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi described the allegations as serious, urging Kalembe to file a formal complaint with supporting evidence.

“Once an official complaint has been submitted, the Commission will leave no stone unturned in its investigation,” he said.

Ms Kalembe said her grievance goes beyond the monetary demand, highlighting what she perceives as deeper corruption within the electoral system.

Kalembe’s allegations raise serious questions about the integrity and transparency of Uganda’s electoral process.

The Electoral Commission has faced criticism in the past over its handling of elections, and these claims are likely to intensify calls for accountability.

Despite these challenges, Kalembe affirmed her commitment to her political career, reiterating her determination to break barriers and pursue her goal of becoming Uganda’s first female president.
