Africa-Press – Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has launched a political mobilisation drive in the Busoga sub-region under her new role as Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Addressing hundreds of residents at Namayingo Secondary School in Bukooli South Namayingo District on Friday, Among thanked supporters for the overwhelming backing that secured her a seat on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) last month, and signalled her intent to strengthen NRM’s presence in the Busoga sub-region while bolstering her own political influence.
“I have come here to say appreciate the people of Namayingo for voting for me as Second National Vice Chairperson as it was the best district I had. For me, I’m not looking for any other vote now. I am asking you to vote for the president,” she said.
During her visit, Among announced a series of financial pledges aimed at boosting SACCO groups and re-building party structures which included contributions towards village NRM Chairpersons, LC1s, Ghetto youth, women, and the Masaza youth group.
Among further called upon residents to rally behind the NRM in driving development, emphasizing that lasting transformation in their communities could only be achieved through unity and effective leadership.
“Let us join hands to develop this area,” she said, noting that progress is only possible when communities elect leaders who genuinely care about the people. “That’s why I urge you to also support the NRM’s party’s flag bearers, as these are leaders who have direct access to the President.”
Taking a sharp swipe at the leading opposition Party the National Unity Platform (NUP), Among dismissed the idea of “protest votes,” a narrative increasingly pushed by the party since the start of the election season, particularly in Busoga, where they had made secured overwhelming victory in 2021.
She further stressed that such a vote would outdo the peace and security that has been brought forth by the NRM.
“Why are we protesting, if we have peace, security, roads, accessible education, and hospitals? But even though, we are going to add more. We are upgrading the hospital here to a district hospital. I request that you vote President Museveni,” she said.
Among underscored the critical role of grassroots party leaders in securing votes, reminding NRM chairpersons at village, parish, and sub-county levels that they form the backbone of the mobilisation effort.
However, local leaders seized the opportunity to highlight persistent challenges in the area.
The Bukooli South Member of Parliament Abdul Adidwa, reminded Among of the issue of poor infrastructure, emphasising the need of an industrial park or factory within the area in order to increase productivity and enable people to get jobs.
Namayingo District Chairperson Ronald Sanya raised concerns including land grabbing, rising poverty, and limited access to the district’s only hospital with some patients taking up-to six hours on boat, only to arrive at a hospital which is classified as a Health Centre IV.
The Speaker pledged to relay these concerns to the president and assured that action would be taken.
After Namayingo, the Speaker proceeded to Bugiri District, where she was received by Bukooli Central Member of Parliament Solomon Silwany.
During his address, Silwany raised issues including the district’s lack of electricity and ongoing land grabbing.
In her speech, Among reiterated her previous appeals and assured that she would follow up on the district’s pressing challenges.
She emphasized that the main purpose of her visit was to mobilize support for President Museveni, as well as for all Parliamentary and Local Council flag bearers under the ruling party.
Additionally, she welcomed several young people into the NRM who had chosen to abandon opposition parties.
