NUP Supporters Back NRM Candidate in Mubende Fallout

Africa-Press – Uganda. Angry NUP supporters in Katabalanga Ward, led by Edward Yiga, the ward’s Secretary for Publicity, have publicly dropped the National Unity Platform and thrown their support behind Mubende Municipality MP Hajj Bashir Lubega Ssempa, who currently serves in Parliament on the NRM ticket.

Earlier this year, MP Ssempa announced he would not participate in party primaries and instead pursue a second term as an independent candidate, while maintaining NRM leanings.

The move by NUP leaders and supporters followed a relief event organized by MP Ssempa in Katabalanga, where he donated items to people with disabilities and the elderly, including blankets, jerseys, balls for the youth, and hoes for farmers.

“I am the Secretary for Publicity for Katabalanga Village as well as Katabalanga Ward, but our NUP supporters were shocked when the party issued the flag to the wrong person. We have decided to rally behind you, as you can see all of us here,” said Edward Yiga.

In response, MP Ssempa welcomed the new supporters, promising to continue serving the community.

“I want to welcome our brothers and sisters from the National Unity Platform who have seen the light and joined us. I promise to continue serving you, the people of Mubende, regardless of political party,” he said.

Earlier this week, NUP released its official list of flag bearers, awarding the Mubende Municipality ticket to Sumayah Nabawanuka.

The primary contest for NUP aspirants included three candidates: Bob Richard Kyamanywa, Ismael Ssegawa (commonly known as Sureman Ssegawa), and Nabawanuka.

Sylver Kanyike, the party spokesperson for Mubende District, appealed to members to remain calm, stressing NUP’s overarching goal of removing President Museveni from power.

“Our main goal as NUP is to remove President Museveni from power, and I want to encourage our party members not to make decisions in anger,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ismael Ssegawa has petitioned the Elections Management Committee, requesting a review of the nomination process.
