Africa-Press – Uganda. Muslims in the Teso Muslim District have sworn in Sheikh Ramadhan Ibrahim Ibwakiti as their new District Kadhi following a unanimous nomination process, marking a peaceful leadership transition in the North Eastern Muslim Region.
Sheikh Ibwakiti took the Oaths of Allegiance and Secrecy on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Soroti Muslim School, adjacent to the district’s main mosque. His appointment followed endorsement by the District Council of Sheikhs and approval by the Joint Committee, before being formally confirmed by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje.The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Secretary for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Imran Ssali, representing the Mufti.
Senior Muslim clerics, political leaders, and representatives of the Inter-Religious Council attended the event.As part of the transition, the outgoing Kadhi, Sheikh Asuman Muhammad Ocen, formally handed over office, presenting an accountability report detailing district assets, including land titles, bank accounts, properties, vehicles, motorcycles, and other official equipment.
UMSC officials said the handover underscored transparency and continuity in the administration of Muslim affairs in the district.
Local leaders used the occasion to call for unity and respect for institutional mechanisms for resolving internal disputes.
Soroti East Division MP-elect Attan Okia Moses pledged cooperation with the new Kadhi, urging Muslims to harness their potential for social and economic development.
In his farewell remarks, Sheikh Ocen said he was leaving office with “clean hands,” highlighting achievements during his tenure, including securing land titles for key UMSC properties despite operational challenges.In his acceptance speech, Sheikh Ibwakiti pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor and committed to inclusive leadership and close cooperation with the Muslim community.
North Eastern Regional Assistant to the Mufti, Sheikh Abubakar Omar Obilan, described the swearing-in as historic, noting that Sheikh Ibwakiti meets constitutional requirements on formal Islamic theological training.
In a message read on his behalf, the Mufti emphasized unity, brotherhood, and renewed focus on development, calling on Muslims in Teso to work collectively toward transforming their communities.
