Africa-Press – Uganda. State House, through the State House Controller, Jane Barekye, has extended financial assistance to residents of Kamwokya, Kisenyi II, following a devastating fire that razed homes and small businesses earlier this week.
A total of Shs 10 million was delivered to 12 affected residents, many of whom lost all their property in the blaze. The funds were handed over by Faisal Ndase of the Youth Wealth Creation Programme (YWCP) coordinator, who represented Ms Barekye during a visit to the affected area. The fire broke out on Tuesday night at around 8:00 pm, destroying property worth millions of shillings before residents and police intervened to prevent it from spreading further. By Wednesday morning, families and traders were left counting losses, with the cause of the fire yet to be established.
During his visit, Ndase met several victims, including salon operators, and chapati makers, many of whom are beneficiaries of the Youth Wealth Creation programme. He said the intervention was meant to help them restart their livelihoods after the unexpected tragedy.“The goal of the Youth Wealth Creation programme is to ensure that grassroots people improve their economic conditions,” Ndase said. “When such people are affected by disasters like this, it becomes our responsibility to stand with them so they can recover. That is why Madam Barekye sent me to deliver these 10 million shillings to support the victims.”
Victims welcomed the gesture, describing it as timely and reassuring. Christine Nakayenga, one of those affected, expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for appointing Jane Barekye to oversee State House interventions and thanked Ndase for ensuring the assistance reached them as promised.“We had lost hope after everything was destroyed, but this support has given us strength to start again,” Nakayenga said.
The LC1 Chairperson for the area, Robert Odongokara Ameku, said residents made frantic efforts to contain the fire before police arrived and managed to stop it from spreading to neighboring structures.
“The cause of the fire is still unknown, but we are thankful that the police responded in time and that government has come in to support our people,” Ameku noted.
Authorities say investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, as residents begin the difficult process of rebuilding their homes and businesses with support from government and well-wishers
