The 2026 Buganda Sub-county Games have officially begun in Buweekula County, with football matches marking the start of a competition expected to engage more than 4,000 players across 175 sub-counties, as leaders emphasize talent development, discipline, and professional standards.
The games opened on February 14, 2026, in Buweekula County with two football matches featuring four sub-counties. Musaale Kiyuni edged Mutuba I Kitenga 1–0, while Mumyuka Bagezza secured a 1–0 victory over Ssaabagabo Kasambya.
While launching the competitions, the Buganda Minister for Sports, Robert Serwanga, announced that the games will be played across all 175 sub-counties of Buganda until the end of March.
He called upon the people of Buganda to actively support and participate in the activities.
“Today we have launched the 2026 Sub-county competitions, which we expect to be more exciting than last year’s. Last year, 4,175 players participated from all the 175 sub-counties, which shows how popular these competitions have become,” said Serwanga.
Minister Serwanga explained that the games aim to provide young people with a platform to discover and develop their talents while creating healthy competition to identify outstanding players who can progress to higher Buganda competitions such as Schools, Clans, and the Masaza Cup.
He also emphasized discipline among participants, noting that proper conduct could open doors to greater opportunities.
“If these competitions are handled well, they can help young people develop talents that may take them beyond the country,” he added, stressing that under the Situla Omutindo initiative, all activities must be conducted professionally and at high standards.
Buweekula County Chief Ssempijja Andrew Mukasa expressed excitement about hosting the opening of this year’s competitions, saying the initiative will inspire young people to view football as a pathway to a better future.
He encouraged players to display high levels of performance and discipline. Buweekula also pledged to use the sub-county games to identify talent as part of preparations to defend the Masaza Cup title they won for the first time last year.
