Omutaka Gabunga Warns on Clan Property Sales

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Hereditary Cheif of the Mmamba (Lungfish) Clan (Namakaka lineage), Omutaka Gabunga James Mubiru Zziikwa V, who also serves as the 38th Gabunga, has strongly cautioned clan members against the unauthorized sale of clan property. He warned that individuals found engaging in such acts would face legal action and be prosecuted in courts of law.

He made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with descendants from the Mugula–Entebbe lineage, led by their lineage head, Omutaka Lubuuzibwa John Mayombwe. The delegation had paid a courtesy visit to the Gabunga’s palace as part of the ongoing Olutikkulo initiative — a program introduced within the Mmamba Clan structure that encourages each lineage (essiga) to formally visit the clan headquarters.

Under the Olutikkulo arrangement established by the Mmamba Clan, clan members convene at the Gabunga’s palace and present gifts, including financial contributions, to support the administration and activities of the clan. On this occasion, the Mugula–Entebbe lineage presented cash and various items in support of clan operations.

Omutaka Gabunga expressed gratitude to the descendants for their commitment and active participation in clan programs. He particularly commended parents who prioritize educating their children and instilling strong values, emphasizing that education lays a firm foundation for a child’s future success.

“A parent who sacrifices to educate their child provides them with a strong start in life,” he said, applauding members who are investing in the next generation.

The Clan Prime Minister (Katikkiro) of the Mmamba Clan, Gerald Kaberenge Kyobe, underscored the importance of active involvement by clan members in all development initiatives. He praised the Mmamba descendants for embracing the Olutikkulo program and reaffirmed that collective effort is key to strengthening clan structures.

The Second Deputy Prime Minister and legal advisor to the clan, Denis Bugaya, emphasized that the Kingdom of Buganda is founded upon strong clan systems. He urged descendants to fully engage in clan activities, stressing that a stronger clan system directly contributes to a more resilient Buganda Kingdom.

Omutaka Lubuuzibwa John Mayombwe rallied his lineage members to maintain unity and work collectively toward the advancement of both the clan and the Buganda Kingdom.

Speaking on behalf of the Wampona lineage, Nsubuga David called upon Mugula descendants to invest more heavily in agriculture, particularly in coffee growing and other crops, as a strategy to increase household incomes and sustainably fund clan activities.

Ssaalongo Mubiru David, representing sub-lineages directly affiliated with the Gabunga household, encouraged members to adopt cooperative development models to accelerate socio-economic progress and fight poverty through collective effort.

Meanwhile, Omutaka Ssemanobe Kizito Paul (26th) urged fellow descendants to safeguard cultural norms and traditions, beginning with the upbringing of their children.

Nsubuga KK Lubereto, Katikkiro of the Mugula–Entebbe lineage, cautioned members against individuals fraudulently constructing shrines in the name of the Mugula lineage in Entebbe. He warned that such actions are divisive and aimed at creating confusion within the lineage.

Byekwaso Edward Nsubuga further encouraged young people to embrace their clan identity and actively participate in initiatives aimed at strengthening and developing their cultural heritage.

The ceremony was attended by lineage heads, sub-lineage representatives, religious leaders, and descendants of Omutaka Gabunga from various levels of the clan hierarchy, reflecting strong support for unity, accountability, and sustainable cultural development within the Mmamba Clan.
