Africa-Press – Uganda. Next Media journalists have emerged as top winners at the Uganda Conservation Awards 2026, cementing the station’s growing influence in environmental reporting.
At the awards dinner held on February 25, 2026, NBS journalists Richard Olwenyi, David Ochieng, and Joshua Kagoro scooped top honors in the Community Conservation and Wildlife Protection categories.
Each winner received a cash prize of Shs5 million in recognition of their outstanding reporting on conservation issues.
The colourful ceremony was officiated by the Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, who applauded journalists for amplifying conservation efforts across the country.
Speaking at the event, the minister raised concern over increasing threats facing Uganda’s protected areas, including poaching and land grabbing.
“Wildlife protected areas are facing a number of challenges as many leaders are eyeing these protected areas. Had it not been that the President is with us, we could have lost most of the game parks,” Bahinduka said.
He emphasized the critical role of the media in safeguarding the country’s natural heritage, noting that a vigilant and bold press is essential in promoting conservation gains while exposing threats within the tourism sector.
“You are our watchdogs. More publicity needs to be created about this award to attract higher participation,” he added.
Other winners at the ceremony included Edward Anyoli, Gerald Tenywa, and UBC’s Sarah Mawerere, among others, recognized for their contribution to environmental and conservation reporting.
The Uganda Conservation Awards aim to celebrate excellence in environmental journalism and promote sustainable management of the country’s wildlife and natural resources.
