Africa-Press – Uganda. First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has led a high-level government effort to harmonise Uganda’s position ahead of renewed bilateral talks with Kenya over the 2022 killing of three geologists and UPDF soldiers in Moroto District.

Kadaga convened an inter-agency meeting in Kampala bringing together officials from the Attorney General’s chambers, defence and security agencies, and ministries handling Karamoja affairs to align the country’s legal, technical and diplomatic approach to the matter.

She emphasized that the issue goes beyond a single incident, warning of its wider implications on regional stability. Kadaga said constructive engagement between Uganda and Kenya is essential for maintaining cross-border peace and cooperation.

The meeting reviewed progress made so far and identified key gaps that have delayed resolution of the incident in Lopita Sub County. Officials agreed to focus on three outstanding issues, including compensation for the victims, handling of convicted offenders, and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Kadaga called for a coordinated government approach, stressing the importance of accurate information-sharing and presenting a unified national position during the upcoming talks. She urged all agencies involved to ensure technical clarity and consistency in Uganda’s submissions.

The discussions also underscored the need for sustained diplomatic engagement and mutual respect between the two countries as they work towards resolving the dispute.

Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and mutually acceptable resolution with Kenya, anchored on justice for the victims, regional harmony, and mechanisms to prevent future cross-border conflicts.
