Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda’s banking and financial services industry has taken a decisive step into the future. In a landmark move set to reshape skills, innovation, and professionalism across the sector, the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services (UIBFS) and Vision Africa AI have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence and digital capabilities.

Signed on Thursday, April 2, 2026, during a high-level AI Masterclass, the partnership signals more than collaboration—it marks the beginning of a structured, nationwide effort to prepare financial professionals for an increasingly digital and data-driven economy.

As Uganda intensifies its digital transformation agenda, financial institutions are under growing pressure to modernize operations, enhance customer experience, and manage risks more intelligently. At the heart of this shift is artificial intelligence.

The partnership brings together Vision Africa AI’s expertise in AI education and innovation with UIBFS’s established training infrastructure and extensive reach across banks, microfinance institutions, fintechs, and regulators. The collaboration is expected to create a strong platform for designing, delivering, and certifying AI-focused programmes tailored to Uganda’s financial ecosystem.

Building Skills, Driving Innovation

At its core, the MoU focuses on equipping professionals with the tools needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry. Key areas of collaboration include:

Expanding AI and digital literacy across all levels of the financial workforce

Developing market-driven, employer-validated certifications and short courses in AI, data science, and cybersecurity

Promoting responsible and ethical adoption of artificial intelligence

Strengthening professionalism and continuous learning pathways across the sector

This structured approach is designed to ensure that training remains practical, relevant, and aligned with industry needs.

Leadership Speaks

Speaking at the signing, Dr. James Okello Onyoin, Board Chairperson of Vision Africa AI, emphasized the broader ambition behind the partnership, noting its potential to position Uganda’s financial sector for global competitiveness in the digital age.

Echoing this vision, UIBFS Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Goretti Masadde highlighted the institute’s commitment to raising industry standards.

“This partnership will strengthen training and certification pathways that help institutions adopt AI ethically and effectively,” she said.

The initiative is expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of Uganda’s financial services sector by building a workforce that is skilled, adaptive, and ready to harness emerging technologies.
