Tensions are escalating within the Kamwenge–Kitagwenda Taxi Drivers and Owners Cooperative Society (KKATODA) as a section of members threatens to boycott the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for April 14, 2026, citing concerns over alleged mismanagement and lack of accountability by the leadership.
The disgruntled members have accused the cooperative’s chairperson, David Mugisha, of fueling internal misunderstandings and running the SACCO without transparency.
“This is not the first time we are raising these concerns. The chairperson has consistently failed to account for members’ funds and instead portrays himself as superior to everyone in the SACCO,” one member said.
Members further claim that Mugisha has not provided clear accountability for funds totaling up to Shs 320 million, part of the Shs 600 million reportedly handled by the SACCO over the past four years.
“We entrusted the leadership with our money, but to date, there is no proper accountability for a significant portion of it. We suspect mismanagement and possible falsification of documents,” another member alleged.
The accusations come barely a month after drivers under the same umbrella lodged similar complaints, accusing the chairperson of unilateral decision-making and failing to provide financial transparency.
Members also allege that Mugisha has engaged in self-entitlement practices, deepening mistrust within the SACCO.
“As members, we feel sidelined. Decisions are made without consultation, and attempts to seek accountability are often ignored,” a driver added.
As a result, the aggrieved members have resolved to boycott the April 14 AGM, arguing that their concerns have not been addressed.
However, they have expressed willingness to attend a harmonization meeting scheduled for April 16, 2026, following an invitation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.
“We believe the intervention of the ministry will help resolve these issues fairly. That is the meeting we are prepared to attend,” one member noted.
In response, KKATODA chairperson David Mugisha dismissed the boycott threats, maintaining that the AGM will proceed as planned.
“The Annual General Meeting will take place on April 14 as scheduled. All members are expected to attend and air their views through the right channels,” Mugisha said.
The unfolding dispute highlights growing governance challenges within transport cooperatives, with members now looking to government intervention to restore trust and accountability in KKATODA.
