Africa-Press – Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has firmly dismissed speculation about a potential presidential bid, describing the claims as “absolute nonsense” and announcing plans to retire from active politics by 2031.

Among made the remarks on Monday during a visit to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretariat, where she had gone to support upcoming youth and sports initiatives.

She was received by David Kabanda, a key PLU official.

Addressing the growing speculation circulating in political circles and on social media, Among was unequivocal in shutting it down.

“I have heard people making claims that I am interested in the presidency… that is absolute nonsense,” she said.

“People are saying that Anita wants to stand for presidency in 2031. I want to tell Ugandans that even where I am, I have overachieved. I am saying, in 2031, I am retiring from active politics,” she added.

She stressed that her current role at the helm of the Parliament of Uganda remains her top priority, urging the public and political actors to avoid what she termed as unnecessary distractions and instead focus on service delivery and legislative work.

Among also signaled loyalty to the ruling party’s direction, stating she would support any candidate endorsed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

“If my brother is standing or anybody else that the President supports, I will support. This talk that Anita wants to be president is total nonsense,” she said.

Her visit also carried a strong show of support for the upcoming birthday run of Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Representing Bukedea Comprehensive School, where she serves as director, Among purchased 5,000 running kits to facilitate participation by students and the wider community.

She said the initiative aligns with the school’s commitment to promoting patriotism, discipline, and youth engagement through sports, and commended the organisers for creating a unifying national platform.

Among further revealed that she will personally take part in the run scheduled for April 26, trading her official attire for a tracksuit to join thousands of participants.

Kabanda welcomed the Speaker’s contribution, noting that her involvement significantly boosts the profile and momentum of the event.

The Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Birthday Run is expected to attract large participation from across the country, blending celebration with a broader message of national unity and health awareness.
