Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has dismissed as false and malicious reports circulating on social media that its Executive Director, Chris Mukiza, attempted to shoot Rubanda West Member of Parliament Moses Kamuntu.
In a statement issued on April 20, 2026, and signed by Principal Public Relations Officer Didacus Okoth, UBOS said the claims were “baseless” and intended to damage both Mukiza’s personal reputation and the image of the agency.
The claim was first published by Eagle, a local news portal, in an article that alleged that a confrontation between Mukiza and Kamuntu at a hotel in Kololo nearly escalated into a shooting incident after a minor vehicle scratch.
According to the report, Kamuntu claimed Mukiza retrieved a firearm from his vehicle with intent to shoot, but the weapon allegedly jammed, causing the magazine to fall and bullets to scatter.
UBOS has, however, categorically denied the incident, urging the public to disregard the claims.
“The reports are baseless, false and with malicious intentions aimed at damaging Mukiza’s reputation and the corporate image of Uganda Bureau of Statistics,” the statement read.
The agency also criticized the online outlet behind the story, accusing it of engaging in what it described as “lazy and armchair journalism,” and suggested the publication may have been driven by ulterior motives, including possible extortion.
UBOS maintained that no such shooting attempt occurred and called on the public to treat the allegations with contempt.
The incident has sparked debate online, highlighting concerns about misinformation and the role of digital platforms in amplifying unverified claims.
