Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has reported major progress in Operation Shujaa, its ongoing offensive against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
During a press briefing at the UPDF Mountain Division Headquarters in Fort Portal City, Major General Richard Otto, the Commander of the Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa, outlined significant achievements since the operation’s launch in November 2021.
“Several top ADF commanders have been captured, while others have been eliminated in joint operations,” said Maj Gen Otto. He also noted the destruction of numerous enemy camps, the recovery of weapons and ammunition, and the rescue of abductees as highlights of the mission.
The offensive has led to the restoration of peace in previously volatile regions. Liberated areas now see schools reopening, markets functioning, and residents regaining their freedom of movement.
“Peace is slowly but surely returning to these regions,” Maj Gen Otto remarked.
A key component of the operation has been the rehabilitation of rescued abductees. Major Dr. Daniel Okello, the Division Medical Officer and Head of Medical Services for Operation Shujaa, praised the progress in treating those freed from captivity.
“Currently, we have 20 rescued abductees who are in good health, a marked improvement from their condition when found two months ago,” Dr. Okello said.
Maj Gen Otto urged the public to remain vigilant and actively support counterterrorism efforts. “Avoid involvement in terrorism-related activities and help us ensure these threats are completely eradicated,” he appealed.
The briefing was attended by senior UPDF officials, including Colonel Deo Akiiki, Deputy Director of Defence Public Information, and Colonel Godfrey Kyomuhendo, Division Operations Training Officer, underscoring the operation’s significance.
Operation Shujaa, a joint initiative between Uganda and the DRC, aims to dismantle the ADF, a designated terrorist group responsible for widespread atrocities in the region.
Despite logistical challenges such as harsh terrain, the UPDF remains steadfast in its commitment to securing lasting peace in eastern Congo.
“This is a fight we cannot relent on,” Maj Gen Otto concluded, reiterating the UPDF’s determination to neutralize the ADF and restore stability.
