Africa-Press – Uganda. Following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, tributes continue to pour in from across the globe, acknowledging his enduring legacy in promoting peace, social justice, and environmental stewardship.

The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) joined the worldwide outpouring of grief, offering their condolences to both the Catholic Church in Uganda and around the world.

In a statement , the UPC praised Pope Francis for his lifelong commitment to both the marginalised and the planet.

“Pope Francis has lived a full life and left behind a very rich legacy that shall continue to touch our hearts and minds,” the statement read.

The Pope’s work in advocating for the environment stood at the forefront of his papacy.

He warned of the severe consequences of deforestation and the overuse of natural resources, urging the world to adopt more sustainable practices such as solar and hydroelectric energy.

The UPC echoed his call, urging the Ugandan government to prioritise renewable energy policies, make them more affordable and accessible, and initiate large-scale reforestation efforts to safeguard the planet’s future.

“Both the Amazon and Congo forests, as well as Uganda’s Mabila Forest, face dire threats due to man’s unsustainable activities,” the statement emphasised, underscoring the importance of Pope Francis’s environmental mission.

His emphasis on the protection of ecosystems resonated particularly in Africa, where many countries rely on their natural resources for survival.

The Pope’s concern for the vulnerable and displaced populations was also highlighted in the UPC’s statement.

Known for his unwavering advocacy for refugees, the poor, and the marginalised, Pope Francis’s ministry centered on the dignity of all human beings.

The UPC remarked on his historic gestures, such as his kneeling in prayer and kissing the feet of South Sudan’s leaders, a powerful symbol of his commitment to peace and reconciliation.

“Pope Francis worked towards the protection of refugees as well as reaching out to those living on the margins of society while encouraging the poor to have a special position in the Church,” the UPC noted, reflecting on how his actions consistently embodied Christ’s message of compassion and inclusivity.

Pope Francis’s death marks the end of an era for the Vatican, leaving behind a legacy of reconciliation, environmental advocacy, and a tireless pursuit of justice for the oppressed.

As the world mourns, his influence remains a beacon for future generations committed to peace, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
