Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has engaged cultural institutions and leaders in Kampala to discuss their pivotal role in preserving Uganda’s environment.

The dialogue highlighted the deep connection between cultural heritage and environmental conservation, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts to combat ongoing environmental degradation.

Teddy Nabakooza Galiwango, representing the Kingdom of Buganda, underscored the intrinsic link between cultural institutions and environmental stewardship.

“Cultural institutions are key custodians in preserving the environment. Our clans are tied to animals, and we rely on forests, lakes, and rivers. We have an obligation to protect them, and it’s about time we act,” Nabakooza stated.

She further called for amplifying awareness about environmental degradation and aligning initiatives like Ekyibila kya Kabaka with conservation goals to ensure sustainability for future generations.

Barirega Akankwasa, Executive Director of NEMA, emphasised the authority of cultural leaders in driving conservation efforts.

“Cultural leaders are important partners in cultural heritage and have direct influence over social factors, including the environment. Culture embodies self-belief and conservation elements. We want these leaders to use their powers to protect the environment and encourage citizens to be watchdogs for conservation,” Akankwas remarked.

NEMA stressed the need for clear policies to promote conservation, not only for today but for future generations.

The engagement underscored the potential of cultural institutions to lead by example, leveraging their influence to foster environmental accountability and sustainable practices across communities.

The dialogue marks a step toward stronger partnerships between NEMA and cultural leaders to safeguard Uganda’s natural and cultural heritage.
