Africa-PressUganda. ELECTION WATCH 2021 | VIOLENCE |The National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential candidate says Ashraf Kasirye, one of the journalists on his team, who was injured a few days ago; is steadily recovering and out of danger. In a tweet on his account, he said, “By way of update, our brother, journalist Kasirye Ashraf is still in a critical but stable condition in ICU. The medical team is hopeful he will make it.”The Criminal Investigations Department spokesperson Charles Twine, a few days ago, explained that Kasirye was injured, in the process of containing Kyagulanyi’s supporters. He explained at the time, “While in the Greater Masaka, as the Police attempted to enforce the COVID-19 regulations; there was a scuffle; in which a journalist was injured.”Other journalists injured on the same day, in the same camp, as police intercepted Kyagulanyi; included NTV’s Ali Mivule and Daniel Lutaaya.”One of the Presidential contestants, under the National Unity Platform (Robert Kyagulanyi) attempted to use a different route from the designated one. During this scuffle, we have to use teargas to subdue the supporters of the candidate,” Twine explained. He added, “During this scuffle, unfortunately, one of the journalists for Ghetto TV, known as Kasirye Ashraf’s left eye was injured. It is reported that he was hit by something hard and severely injured. He was rushed to Masaka Hospital to get quick first aid. His condition was not good, though not very worrying.”Twine added, “He got first aid and there were plans to transport him to Kampala, to get better medical attention from experts. Police has opened a file at the CIID Headquarters to investigate what really caused this scuffle to an extent that a journalist was hurt to this magnitude.”He also explained, “We know the great job that is done by journalists in covering the ongoing elections, and we will continue to protect you. We will also endeavour that we do not get into situations that might compromise the safety of journalists as they cover campaigns.
