Absa Visa Renew Partnership for Financial Innovation

Africa-Press – Uganda. Absa and Visa have renewed their long-standing strategic partnership to drive the growth of inclusive, secure, and digitally enabled financial ecosystems across Absa’s Regional Operations (ARO) — its footprint outside South Africa.

The agreement was formalised at a signing ceremony in Johannesburg and marks a pivotal milestone in a relationship that has championed financial innovation across the continent for years.

Rooted in a shared ambition to transform how individuals and businesses engage with financial services, the renewed partnership will focus on expanding digital infrastructure, empowering small businesses, and enhancing customer-centric innovation in the Cards and Payments space.

“This regional expansion marks an exciting new chapter in our partnership with Absa — one that continues to challenge conventions and redefine what’s possible in financial services,” said Michael Berner, Head of Southern and East Africa at Visa.

“We share a strong commitment to expanding digital access across the region. Absa’s innovation leadership is driving real impact, and we’re proud to support their momentum with Visa’s global expertise and technology to deliver seamless experiences for their customers.”

The partnership has already yielded several market-first innovations. Absa became the first bank in multiple African markets to introduce Visa Direct, enabling domestic and international card-to-card payments.

The launch of Visa Signature and Infinite metal cards redefined premium banking standards with exclusive lifestyle benefits, while Absa Pay issuer wallets expanded digital payment capabilities — debuting first in Mauritius.

“In partnership with Visa, we are building a financial ecosystem that mirrors the pace and dynamism of Africa’s evolving economies. In every market we serve, we remain deeply connected to local communities to ensure our solutions meet the realities and needs of our customers,” said Saviour Chibiya, Chief Executive, Absa Regional Operations.

In 2025, Absa further expanded its offerings with the launch of Visa Business Credit Cards, designed to address practical business challenges for entrepreneurs and SMEs.

These cards come with tailored benefits, spend control features, and access to Visa Spend Clarity Plus — a first for Sub-Saharan Africa.
