Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda national team captain, Joseph Cwinya-ai and Deo Akope triumphed at the 2025 Uganda Golf Club Captain’s Bell tournament bankrolled by Absa Bank Uganda.
Cwinya-ai won in the elite gross with 200 gross (-6) in 54 holes played over three days while Anthony Otukei was the runners up in the same category.
Reigning Uganda Amateur Open champion, Joseph Reagan Akena finished fifth after scored 220.
Meanwhile in the professional category, Deo Akope with 277 strokes (gross) played in four rounds (-11) with Grace Kasango scoring 285 gross to come second.
Phillip Kasozi, David Kamulindwa and Tom Jingo each scored 286 gross to tie in third place while Ronald Otile (287) and Tadeo Rodell Gaite(288) came sixth and seventh respectively.
On the other side, Davis Kato and Abbey Bagalana each with 289 strokes finished joint eighth.
In the ladies categories, Peace Kabwasweka with 234 gross won in the elite gross while Harriet Kitaka, Gloria Mbaguta, Meron Kyomugisha , Martha Babirye and Joyce Kisembo finished second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Absa Bank Uganda Managing Director, David Wandera said as they support the tournament for the seventh year running, this year’s shs179 million investment reaffirms their deep commitment to golf in Uganda.
“Our goal is to develop talent, particularly in golf. I’m thrilled to see professionals participating and setting records. Yesterday, a player achieved a course record of 63, a feat never accomplished before. We’re proud to be part of this achievement,” Wandera said.
“Looking back, we’ve seen significant growth in participation over the years. I’m excited to see even more members participating this year, especially younger players. Our vision at Absa is to empower Africans and contribute to their stories. Through initiatives like golf, we aim to make a positive impact, one story at a time.”
He said this year’s 20 million professional prize kitty is the bank’s way of rewarding excellence.
