Africa-Press – Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has declared that the 2026–2031 term will be her last as Speaker, and that her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, will succeed her.
Among made the statement on Sunday while addressing National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates in Mbarara, who endorsed her bid for the Central Executive Committee (CEC) position of Second National Vice Chairperson (Female).
“I have one unwritten term which ends in 2031, and after then I will hand it over to my brother Thomas Tayebwa. We shall have a lady who will also come and take this position,” Among told the cheering delegates.
She added that when Tayebwa assumes the speakership, she plans to vacate the CEC post as well so that it can be taken up by the next female speaker, in order to maintain synergy between Parliament and the NRM party leadership.
“When I leave Parliament, I will also leave this position of the Second National Vice Chairperson for the lady who will be the sitting Speaker, for them to be able to coordinate the party together with Parliament,” Among said.
The Speaker praised her working relationship with MPs across the political spectrum, saying this goodwill has made her journey smoother.
“It is so important to be good to people. It is not only the people of Ankole saying good things about me but also other regions. My colleagues and Members of Parliament are funding my bid for the NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female),” she said.
NRM leaders from Mbarara endorsed her unopposed as the preferred candidate for the CEC seat. Mbarara City Mayor Robert Kakyebezi described Among as a capable and visionary leader deserving of a seat on the party’s top organ.
“I don’t see any reason not to support and vote for the Rt Hon Anita Annet Among because she has got the potential and will best serve us at the top organ of our party,” Kakyebezi said.
Mbarara City South MP Mwine Mpaka praised Among for previously supporting a budget allocation for Katete Bridge, even though the funds were later withdrawn. He expressed optimism that she would lobby for its reinstatement.
“Please support her and we win this seat,” Mpaka urged the delegates.
NRM Chairman for Mbarara City, Wilson Tumwine, called on party faithful to back Among and prepare for a tough campaign season ahead.
“We have a duty to make sure the world knows NRM is strong, alive, and in existence. Where we are heading is tough. We want to reclaim the lost areas. Expect sleepless nights until January next year when the President gets 100% votes in the forthcoming election,” he said.
Tumwine urged the delegates to remain focused and not underestimate the electorate.
“The current generation is very tricky. You must either convince them strongly or risk being confused. Let us support our Speaker for the CEC position so that we benefit from her influence,” he added.
Among is currently locked in a high-profile contest with former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga for the NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) slot on CEC. After her rally in Mbarara, Among proceeded to Sheema Municipality to seek more endorsements for her campaign.
