Archbishop Ssemwogerere Pledges Shs50M for Lubaga Dinner

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere, has praised the growing spirit of unity and generosity among Catholics and well-wishers as Rubaga Cathedral prepares to mark its 100th anniversary this October.

Speaking at a fundraising dinner held Thursday evening at the Pope Paul VI Memorial Hotel in Ndeeba, the Archbishop lauded all contributors to the cathedral’s centenary preparations and pledged Shillings 50 million as his personal contribution.

“There is a great task ahead of us,” Ssemogerere said. “We shall move together and make Rubaga a cathedral that adheres to its standard.”

The Archbishop revealed that the funds raised will go toward several key projects, including the refurbishment of the cathedral structure, renovation of the priests’ graveyard, and construction of a dedicated parking area to better accommodate worshippers and visitors.

The dinner brought together senior clerics, cultural leaders, government representatives, media executives, and business leaders.

Earlier, Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko, Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, represented the Kingdom’s backing for the milestone.

Owek. John Frederick Kiyimba Freeman, one of the organizers, announced major contributions from government and corporate bodies, including Shs300 million from President Museveni, a matching pledge from Next Media Group CEO Kin Kariisa, and an offer by Plascon Uganda to repaint the cathedral.

As the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala, Lubaga Cathedral has played a central role in Uganda’s religious and social development since its consecration in 1925.

The October centenary celebrations are expected to draw thousands of pilgrims and will feature a series of religious, cultural, and charitable events across the country.

The fundraising dinner is part of a broader mobilization campaign that will include special masses at Parliament, Bank of Uganda, Centenary Bank, and other institutions led by the Archbishop himself.
