Africa-Press – Uganda. Sam Arineitwe has been declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the Kabale Municipality mayoral seat following a decisive win in the party primaries.

According to results announced by Kabale District NRM Registrar Babra Ainebyoona, Arineitwe garnered 6,643 votes, beating his closest rival Ian Mugisha, who polled 4,520 votes.

The victory puts Arineitwe in pole position to contest for the mayorship in the 2026 general elections.

The Kabale NRM primaries drew close attention due to intense competition among high-profile aspirants vying to take control of a municipality long held by opposition leaders.

While declaring the results, Ainebyoona urged voters to remain steadfast in their support of Arineitwe beyond the primaries.

“I kindly beg you to continue the support even in the coming elections so that he can carry the flag until he wins the final elections in 2026,” she said.

Ainebyoona also emphasized that Kabale Municipality’s leadership had for years been in opposition hands, which she claimed had hindered progress.

In his victory speech, Arineitwe assured voters that the NRM was determined to capture the mayoral seat in 2026. “We are securing the mayorship race for Kabale Municipality come 2026.

The NRM is strong and united,” he said.

He also took a swipe at rivals he accused of sabotaging his bid while claiming to be NRM loyalists.

“There is nothing sweet like defeating people who claim to be NRM yet fight fellow party members. We have given them a dose,” Arineitwe said defiantly.

He vowed to work closely with the party and grassroots supporters to ensure that the NRM reclaims political control of Kabale Municipality for the first time.

Arineitwe’s nomination sets the stage for a heated 2026 mayoral contest, with the ruling party aiming to overturn the opposition’s longstanding dominance in one of southwestern Uganda’s key urban centres.
