Africa-Press – Uganda. Traffic came to a standstill in Wankoko, Bugolobi a Kampala suburb as motorists, Boda Boda riders, and pedestrians converged to take a glance at two lifeless bodies of security guards who were killed last night by unknown assailants.
Preliminary reports by the scene of crime police detectives indicate that Andama Kennedy, 50, and Godfrey Wopugurwa 48, working as security guards with Security Group Africa, could have been gunned down at about 1.00 AM Wednesday morning.
According to a detective who preferred anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press, the two were gunned down using their own rifle number SAR UG Pol.13282584-102416 which was also found at the scene with seven rounds of ammunition and two cartridges that had been discharged.
“The assailants did not take any belongings of the deceased. One had blood still oozing from the stomach,” the detective said.
Mr Ronald Balimwezo, the Nakawa East Member of Parliament, and Moses Mugisha Okwera the former Councillor LCV Nakawa Division both of whom arrived at the scene moments later, suspect that the deaths could be linked to a land wrangle between two business moguls in the area.
According to Balimwezo, a month ago, youths selling potted plants and ornamental garden plants approached him saying they were being evicted from the land that belongs to Kampala City Council.
“These two people are claiming ownership of the same land. I asked them to produce their land titles but apparently, Kampala District Land Board says there was the double allocation of the land to the two,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from the Security Group Africa managers who were at the scene, were futile as none of them allowed to speak to the press.
Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway to know the motive of the killings.
“We do not know the motive. Our investigations are still open. There is a dispute between two people who claim ownership of the same land where the guards were killed, but that is not our conclusion,” he said in a telephone interview.
According to Mr Balimwezo, this is the second time security guards are being killed in Bugolobi area and their guns abandoned. He said last month, two other guards were murdered in Bugolobi where they were guarding and their bodies were discovered in a container a few metres away.
