Africa-Press – Uganda. In a dramatic twist to the Lira District Woman MP race, Linda Agnes Auma has been officially declared the unopposed National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the 2025–2030 term following the nullification of her only rival’s nomination.
The announcement was made on July 4 at the NRM party headquarters in Kampala, where Electoral Commission Chairperson Tanga Odoi confirmed that Akullu Rizik’s nomination had been found fraudulent and was thus cancelled.
“We have investigated the matter, and it is clear that the nomination of Akullu Rizik was irregular and therefore null and void,” Odoi said during a press briefing.
“The integrity of our nomination process must be upheld.”
With Rizik disqualified, Auma was automatically elevated to flag bearer status and presented with her certificate of victory by the party’s electoral body.
“This certificate is a symbol of your legitimacy as the NRM flag bearer, and we expect you to uphold the party’s principles and values,” Odoi said as he handed it to Auma.
A visibly relieved Auma thanked the Commission for standing by the rules and ensuring a fair process. “I’m thrilled that the truth has prevailed. I thank the NRM Electoral Commission for upholding justice and am humbled to be declared the unopposed flag bearer for Lira District Woman MP,” she said.
The development brings clarity and closure to what had become a tense local race, with party insiders lauding the decision as a step toward reinforcing order within NRM ranks.
It also positions Auma strongly as she prepares to reclaim her parliamentary seat under the party’s banner.
Linda Agnes Auma previously served as the Lira Woman MP before losing the seat in the 2021 general elections.
Her return as NRM’s unopposed candidate signals renewed confidence in her leadership and loyalty to party structures.
With the ruling party’s nomination process now concluded in Lira, Auma is set to face off against contenders from other parties in the 2026 general elections.
However, with the NRM’s full backing and no internal competition, she enters the next phase of the race with a commanding head start.
