Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda’s financial sector professionals are putting away their boardroom attire and lacing up their running shoes as they kick off the 2025 Annual Bankers’ Sports Gala, a season of fitness, fun, and camaraderie under the theme “Beyond the Finish Line.”
The event was officially launched with the Bankers’ Run/Walk at the Uganda Bankers Association (UBA) offices in Muyenga, marks the first step in what promises to be an energetic and transformative six-week program.
The gala is organized by the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services (UIBFS) in partnership with UBA.
The evening began with registration and a warm-up Zumba session, setting the tone for the launch of the 30-Day Fitness Challenge. This challenge encourages participants from various banks and financial institutions to walk at least 5,000 steps daily over 30 days, tracked via the new UIBFS Fitness App. Those who complete the challenge earn medals and contribute points to their institutions in the overall competition.
Speaking at the launch, UIBFS CEO Mrs. Goretti Masadde emphasized the importance of wellness in the banking sector, noting that the gala is not only about sports, but about reconnecting with colleagues and building a culture of health.
“This gala is not just about competition. It is a platform where we, as bankers and financial sector professionals, step away from our desks and offices to connect, to celebrate teamwork, and to promote wellness,” Masadde said. “It is a reminder that while we work hard to keep our sector strong, we must also take care of ourselves.”
UBA Executive Director Mr. Wilbrod Owor echoed these sentiments, praising the initiative as vital for staff morale and well-being. He reaffirmed UBA’s commitment to supporting the event and working with UIBFS to explore more sustainable models for the sports gala in future editions.
The Institute also unveiled its new Sports Gala App, a digital platform designed to help staff from all participating member banks track their steps, monitor progress in various games, and stay updated throughout the gala season.
Mr. Michael K. Mugabi, Chairperson of the UIBFS Board, lauded the event’s theme and innovation, drawing parallels between physical endurance and professional resilience.
“This year’s theme, ‘Beyond the Finish Line’, could not be more relevant,” Mugabi said. “Just like in our sector, where challenges demand innovation and persistence, today’s run is not only about crossing the line—it’s about pushing ourselves, supporting each other, and embracing wellness as a lifestyle.”
The 2025 Bankers’ Sports Gala, running up to October 19, will feature a diverse lineup of activities including indoor games, outdoor competitions, swimming, quizzes, and the highly anticipated CEO/ExCo Golf Tournament.
The season offers a unique opportunity for professionals across the banking and financial services sector to unwind, build networks, and foster a culture of health and team spirit.
