Bishop Bukomeko Urges Voters to Reject Bribery

Africa-Press – Uganda. As Uganda moves closer to the 2026 general elections, the Bishop of Mityana Diocese, Rt. Rev. James Bukomeko (Ssalongo), has called on citizens to vote wisely and reject leaders who use money and material gifts to buy votes.

Speaking during during an interview, Bishop Bukomeko expressed concern over what he described as the growing commercialisation of politics, warning that such practices have undermined the delivery of essential services to the people.

“Politics has turned into a business, and this is one of the biggest reasons our leaders fail to serve the interests of those who elect them,” Bishop Bukomeko noted.

“I appeal to all voters to choose leaders who have integrity, honesty, and a true heart for service not those who come with envelopes during campaigns.”

The bishop also cautioned aspiring political leaders against exploiting voters for personal gain, urging them to focus instead on improving the welfare of the people they wish to represent.

“Leadership is not about self-enrichment,those seeking office must prioritise the needs of the people and work towards sustainable development in their communities.”He noted.

As the country prepares for the 2026 elections, Bishop Bukomeko further called upon the Electoral Commission to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process that allows every Ugandan to exercise their right to vote without intimidation or manipulation. “We want an election where every voice counts and every vote matters,” he emphasised. “Let the Electoral Commission conduct a process built on truth, justice, and fairness.”

The prelate’s message adds to growing calls from religious and civic leaders urging Ugandans to maintain peace, uphold democratic values, and reject voter bribery as the campaign season intensifies.
