Bobi Wine Condemns Corruption, Welcomes Defectors to NUP with a Call for Accountability

Africa-Press – Uganda. National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has decried deepening corruption within Uganda’s political system, describing the alleged bribery of Members of Parliament (MPs) as “high treason against the people.” This came as he welcomed a wave of new members into the party during a public event held at NUP’s headquarters in Kavule.

The new recruits included leaders from rival political parties and cultural representatives, signaling growing support for the opposition movement ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Addressing a spirited crowd, Kyagulanyi expressed outrage over allegations that MPs were each given Shs 100 million to support controversial amendments to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Act. The proposed changes have been widely criticised for allegedly seeking to circumvent a Supreme Court ruling that barred the trial of civilians in military courts.

“This is betrayal of the highest order,” Kyagulanyi declared. “It is disturbing to imagine that while citizens in parishes are struggling to share the same Shs 100 million, a single MP shamelessly took that amount to undermine their rights.”

He went on to question the motive behind the amendment, labeling it a politically driven ploy designed to erode the independence of the judiciary and reintroduce repression through army courts.

“This amendment is not about justice. It’s a tool of oppression being disguised as law,” Kyagulanyi said. “We challenge those MPs who claim to stand with the people to come out publicly and reject this theft.”

Kyagulanyi praised more than 70 MPs who have signed a resolution condemning the alleged bribery, and he urged the public to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their representatives.

“Let us isolate every MP who touched that blood money,” he urged. “And when the next election comes, let the people extract the ultimate price from them.”

The NUP leader did not spare his own party members, warning that any MP found to have received the bribe would face consequences.

“If we gather credible evidence that any NUP MP accepted this money, we shall deal with them politically, regardless of who they are,” he warned. “We’ve removed corrupt individuals before, and we won’t hesitate to do it again.”

In addition to addressing corruption, Kyagulanyi renewed his call for the release of several NUP supporters who have been detained without trial for three months. He specifically named Bobi Young, Machete Yasin, and Kalanzi Sharif, who he said are being held in clear defiance of a Supreme Court ruling that deems their detention illegal.

“Our comrades have been held for 90 days now, in total contempt of court,” he said. “We demand their immediate and unconditional release.”

In a stern warning to NUP MPs, Kyagulanyi stated, “If we get evidence that any of our MPs in NUP took this money, we shall politically deal with you, no matter who you are, the same way we have dealt with those who stole before you.”

As the NUP continues to gain momentum, Kyagulanyi emphasised that the movement’s strength lies in unity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to truth and justice.
