Africa-Press – Uganda. The Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD) has distributed 1,500 hybrid Rainbow chickens to 300 households across the Busoga sub-region under the Village Agriculture Model (VAM) project. The initiative aims to improve agricultural productivity, food security, and household incomes.
Launched in August 2024 in partnership with the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, the VAM project promotes sustainable agriculture and positions poultry farming as a viable income-generating activity for rural households.
The Rainbow breed, prized for its fast growth, resilience, and high egg production, provides households with both meat and egg income.
“This initiative complements the President’s Parish Development Model. Our Village Agriculture Model focuses on all aspects of rural life education, health, environment, and agriculture. It’s a game changer for rural transformation,” said Dr. Anthony Mula, Director General of BCD.
During the first phase, 100 households in each of three model villages—Mashaiga (Mayuge), Namayombe (Namayingo), and Busana (Kamuli)—received five chickens each. The project plans to expand to over 700 households per village within three months, establishing local hatcheries to reproduce chicks, expand production, and create employment.
“This breed is high-yielding and adaptable to local conditions. We expect significant improvements in household incomes within the next two years,” said Dr. Richard Musenero, Kamuli District Agricultural Officer.
Regional leaders, including Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, have supported the VAM approach to transform Busoga and enhance the government-led Parish Development Model.
Anchored in the Busoga 10-Year Development Agenda (2020-2030), the project aims to modernize agriculture, promote value addition, and steer the region toward middle-income status by 2030.
With ongoing support from partners and regional leaders, BCD is confident that the VAM project will significantly transform rural livelihoods in Busoga.
