Africa-Press – Uganda. The Diocese of Kampala on Sunday bade farewell to Rev. Canon John Awodi, who officially retired as Diocesan Secretary on Friday, September 7, 2025, after reaching the mandatory clergy retirement age of 65, as stipulated in the canons of the Church of Uganda.
Awodi, who has served as the Diocesan Secretary since 2018, was honored in a special farewell service in recognition of his distinguished leadership and decades-long ministry.
In his farewell sermon, Awodi delivered a deeply moving testimony, attributing his seven years of service as secretary to the grace of God.
“Unmerited favour of the Lord! From being a nobody, born in the bush, to becoming the Diocesan Secretary—it is purely the grace of God,” he said.
“God’s grace is free and qualifies everyone—whether rich, poor, or wretched. No amount of money can buy it, and no human effort can earn it.”
Awodi’s ministry within the Diocese of Kampala spans several decades. He served in multiple capacities, including Vicar of the Church of the Resurrection, Bugolobi; Chaplain of St. Luke’s Chapel, Mulago Hospital; and Youth Pastor of All Saints’ Cathedral.
He will be succeeded by Rev. Dr. Henry Majwala, the Assistant Chaplain of Thorny Croft Chapel, Uganda Christian University.
