All roads lead to the South Rwenzori St Paul’s Cathedral in Kasese Municipality, Sunday, for the ordination and enthronement of Rev Can Nason Baluku, as the Diocese’s third Bishop.
The Rev Can Nason Baluku was in August this year elected by the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Uganda.
Baluku succeeds the Rt Rev Dr Jackson Nzerebende Thembo who has been in service since his election in 2003.
Nzerebende succeeded the now-retired 77-year-old Bishop Zebedee Kahangwa Masereka, the pioneer prelate of the dioceses, which was carved out of the Fort Portal-based Rwenzori Diocese on August 26, 1984.
The people’s demand at that time was to bring church services nearer to the communities of Kasese district, which had been carved out of the then Tooro kingdom in 1974.
Only 200 guests permitted
According to the diocesan secretary, the Rev Can Josephat Bwalhuma, the Bishop of Bukedde Diocese, will enthrone Baluku at the function to be presided over by the archbishop of the Anglican Church in Uganda, Dr. Samuel Kazimba Mugalu.
Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda is expected to represent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as chief guest at the function.
However, according to the chairperson of the function’s Publicity sub-committee, the Rev Alice Nabirye Mbusa, only 200 guests will be allowed to attend the function to prevent the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Ministry of Health Covid-19 updates, Kasese is the third worst hit after Kampala and Wakiso.
Nabirye said the scientific function will be aired on various radios and disseminated on social media.
“We cannot risk allowing more than 200 people to congest here because it is risky. The various structures will be represented by the 200,” she told the media.
South Rwenzori at a glance
South Rwenzori Diocese, which covers that same geographical area as Kasese district, is found in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Having more than 2,000-seater capacity, St Paul’s Cathedral, said to be the second-largest in the country, towers on Kamaiba hill, west of the centre of Kasese Municipality.
