Africa-Press – Uganda. COVID-19 | Religious leaders and civil society organisations (CSOs) have urged the Government to strictly enforce measures on COVID-19, to prevent it from getting out of hand. The co-chairperson of Inter-Religious Council Uganda (IRCU) of presidents, Apostle Dr Joseph Serwadda, raised the concern over the escalating cases of COVID-19 in the country.Serwadda made the remarks while addressing journalists at the IRCU offices Mengo, Kampala on Thursday.”The spike of COVID-19 cases, which has happened in the past few days, is scary. Uganda was doing well. The lockdown and curfew had worked miraculously for us,” he noted.According to the health ministry, COVID-19 tests done on Tuesday confirmed 1,199 new cases.Due to the high rate of transmission, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has been prompted to raise a red fl ag against Uganda, categorising it as a high-risk country for travellers.Serwadda said the public needs to be reminded about their role in preventing the spread of the pandemic.Escalating violenceSerwadda also said religious leaders and CSOs are still disturbed by the escalating electoral violence. He noted that the council of presidents has taken some steps engaging several duty bearers, including the Electoral Commission, Inspector General of Police, and Chief Justice to address the violence. The executive director of the Non-Government Organisations-Forum, Moses Isooba, said they want people’s health put at the forefront.”This is a unique election especially at the backdrop of COVID-19.
