DP Unveils Beatrice Mao for Kampala Lord Mayoral Race

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Democratic Party (DP) has officially unveiled Beatrice Nambi Mao, wife to party president and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs Norbert Mao, as its flag bearer for the Kampala Lord Mayoral race in the 2026 general elections.

Her endorsement followed the withdrawal of her main internal rival, John Bosco Kamoga, who stepped aside to allow the party to rally behind a single candidate.

“I have made this decision willingly to create harmony in the party,” Kamoga said during the unveiling ceremony, dismissing speculation that he had been pressured to make way for Mao’s wife.

The unveiling was presided over by DP’s Election Management Committee chairperson Kennedy Mutenyo, who defended Nambi’s candidature amid murmurs of favoritism.

“Even when Beatrice Nambi is Mao’s wife, she has a right to contest for any position in the party because she is a member,” Mutenyo said.

Nambi, who was disqualified from the 2021 race due to voter registration issues, now returns with a clean slate and party backing to challenge incumbent Erias Lukwago, who is seeking a fourth term, along with other expected candidates from NUP, FDC, and independent blocs.

Meanwhile, in a strategic shift, Norbert Mao announced that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has taken over candidate nominations in key regions, including Kampala, Jinja City, Wakiso, and Greater Masaka.

“This decision was made to safeguard party interests in areas where local structures have collapsed or become dysfunctional,” Mao said.

The DP’s decision to back Nambi places a new face in Kampala’s high-stakes political contest — one that has long been dominated by seasoned opposition leader Erias Lukwago, who first captured the seat in 2011.

Nambi is expected to frame her campaign around a message of reform, gender inclusion, and restoring DP’s urban presence, which has waned significantly in the last two electoral cycles.
