Africa-Press – Uganda. Independent candidates in Uganda can now select campaign symbols approved by the Electoral Commission (EC) for the 2026 elections, ensuring they are easily identifiable on alongside party-backed contestants.

“Every party has their own symbols. We also need independent candidates to have their symbols,” said Latif Ngonzi, the EC returning officer in Ntungamo District.

The EC has a list of household and everyday items that candidates can choose from, including ball, banana, boat, book, borehole, candle, car, chair, clock, coffee, cup, hose, jerrycan, kettle, megaphone, pot, radio, saucepan, table, and television.

Latif highlighted that symbols can reflect a candidate’s message or vision.

“Someone might choose to use a table, to have a round table where issues are discussed and problems solved,” he explained. “Someone might choose, a radio, coffee, among others. It depends upon the individual.”

Symbols remain a crucial tool in Uganda’s elections, especially in rural and low-literacy areas where voters rely on pictorial cues.

While political parties such as the National Resistance Movement (NRM), National Unity Platform (NUP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Democratic Party (DP), PFF, and Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) use registered emblems, independent candidates must select EC-approved symbols.
