Africa-Press – Uganda. Former Ssembabule Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Matthias Kintu has picked expression of interest forms from the National Unity Platform (NUP), signaling his intention to contest as Member of Parliament for Kalungu East in the upcoming elections.

Kintu, who also served as a commissioner in government, said he contested in the 2021 elections and garnered about 8,000 votes in the race won by Francis Katabaazi Katongole of NUP.

However, he claimed constituents repeatedly urged him to join NUP to increase his chances of victory.

“I got about 8,000 votes in 2021, but people were telling me that it was only NUP missing on me to get the needed votes,” he told journalists.

He accused his former party, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), of lacking guiding principles and failing to prioritise service to the public.

“NUP has very good principles as a party. I think they are the right party to be part of if anyone wants to serve Ugandans,” Kintu said.

The former RDC expressed confidence that his previous affiliation with NRM would not jeopardise his chances of securing the NUP ticket.

“Nalukoola was in DP and changed and was given the ticket for Kawempe North. The precedent is there. So I believe the same principle will apply to me as well,” he said.

Kintu added that he looks forward to participating in the internal party process before the final decision on flagbearers is made.
