Africa-Press – Uganda. The Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, Ramathan Ggoobi, has extended an invitation to investors to partner with the Government of Uganda in developing a cable car facility on the Rwenzori Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most spectacular high-altitude ranges.
Speaking during the Uganda–UAE Business Forum held in Kampala on Wednesday, Ggoobi said the project represents a unique opportunity to enhance Uganda’s tourism infrastructure while preserving the natural integrity of one of the continent’s most iconic mountain ecosystems.
“We need an investor who can work with us to develop a cable car facility on Mountain Rwenzori. Many people want to come and hike that mountain but they can’t climb the whole stretch of it. So anyone who is interested, we shall provide all the necessary support,” he said.
A cable car is an aerial lift system that transports passengers in suspended cabins or gondolas along a cable between mountain stations. Commonly used in major global tourist destinations, such systems provide scenic access to rugged terrain and breathtaking panoramic views—without the need for strenuous hiking.
The proposed Rwenzori Cable Car Project aims to make the mountain more accessible to a wider range of visitors, including older and less physically fit tourists, while reducing environmental pressure on traditional hiking routes.
Rising to 5,109 meters (16,762 feet), the Rwenzori is Africa’s third-highest mountain, renowned for its snow-capped peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, and unique alpine vegetation.
Tourism remains one of Uganda’s top foreign exchange earners, generating Shs 5.6 trillion (USD 1.5 billion) in the 2024/25 financial year, according to the Ministry of Finance. Visitor arrivals are expected to rise further as Uganda strengthens its position as an adventure and eco-tourism destination.
Ggoobi assured potential investors that the government is ready to facilitate the project with a stable and supportive business environment.
“Our role is to make sure investors find a ready, supportive, and predictable environment. We are open for business,” he said.
The Rwenzori cable car would be the first of its kind in East Africa, marking a significant milestone in the region’s tourism development.
Beyond attracting international tourists, the project is expected to create local employment opportunities, stimulate infrastructure growth, and elevate Uganda’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.
Known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” the Rwenzori range straddles the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of the few African mountains with permanent glaciers and is listed by UNESCO for its exceptional natural beauty and biodiversity.
