Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda on Friday officially launched the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with government officials pledging to deliver a secure and memorable tournament that will boost sports development and regional cooperation.
The launch ceremony, held at Kololo Independence Grounds, was officiated by President Yoweri Museveni and featured a keynote address from First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni.
Speaking at the event, the First Lady described Uganda’s co-hosting of CHAN 2024 alongside Kenya and Tanzania as a milestone in national recovery and regional integration.
She emphasized that the tournament would not only promote football but also leave a legacy of improved infrastructure and unity across East Africa.
“The opportunity to host CHAN 2024 and later AFCON 2027 marks a fresh page in a new book for our homeland,” Mrs. Museveni said.
She noted that the government had invested in upgrading key sports facilities including FUFA Technical Centre in Kadiba, Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, and Kyambogo sports grounds to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
These improvements, she added, will serve communities long after the tournament ends.
As chairperson of the Local Organising Committee for both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, Mrs. Museveni assured the public of the government’s commitment to hosting a successful, safe, and inclusive event.
She welcomed teams from Algeria, Niger, Guinea, and South Africa, calling Uganda their “home away from home.”
Beyond competition, she said CHAN 2024 carries the spirit of “PAMOJA” a Swahili word for “together” reflecting the tournament’s broader goal of uniting the East African region through sports.
The First Lady also thanked the Confederation of African Football, Parliament, and various government agencies for their support, and praised President Museveni for his role in securing Uganda’s place as a continental football host.
CHAN 2024 is expected to enhance Uganda’s international profile, boost sports tourism, and lay the groundwork for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will also co-host.
