Africa-Press – Uganda. National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Kiruhura District have credited the party’s grassroots mobilization strategy for President Museveni’s overwhelming 99% victory in the 2026 presidential elections.
The district, a longtime NRM stronghold, once again demonstrated its unwavering support for the President, reinforcing Kiruhura’s reputation as a core pillar of NRM dominance.NRM Chairperson Moses Nkesiga Kamiisi and other leadees, celebrated the result, attributing the massive victory to years of strategic engagement with local communities, particularly the youth.
“This win isn’t just a number; it’s a statement of trust from the youngest generation to the most experienced leader,” Nkesiga saidHe emphasized that the significance of the overwhelming support. According to Nkesiga, the result is a direct outcome of the NRM’s continuous engagement with grassroots communities and the party’s efforts to empower young people, ensuring they play an active role in shaping Uganda’s political landscape.
Kiruhura’s 99% support for Museveni was crucial in securing his nationwide victory, which saw the President win 7,946,772 votes, representing 71.65% of the national vote.
His closest competitor, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP), received 24.72%.The result highlighted Kiruhura’s political significance, with the district delivering an almost unparalleled level of support for Museveni compared to other regions.
For local leaders, this result is a direct affirmation of Museveni’s legacy in the region, fueled by years of economic development, infrastructural improvements, and youth-centered initiatives.
Nkesiga explained that the success was not just a political achievement, but also an endorsement of the NRM’s policies that have driven prosperity in the district.
“The youth have been given the tools and the platform to lead, and this victory proves that when they are trusted, they can deliver,” Nkesiga said.
Several key factors contributed to Kiruhura’s overwhelming support for Museveni. One of the primary drivers has been the shift from traditional pastoralism to modern commercial dairy farming.
He noted that policies under the NRM government have helped create substantial economic opportunities in the district, enabling residents to generate income and build wealth from the dairy sector.
Local leaders, including Wilson Kajwengye (Member of Parliament for Nyabushozi County and NRM Chairperson for Nyabushozi), attributed this success to the visible dividends of the NRM’s long-term vision.
Kajwengye, who has been at the forefront of the NRM’s operations in the district, highlighted that the successful integration of modern farming practices has allowed families to improve their livelihoods.
He pointed to the introduction of the four-acre model, which combines dairy farming with other crops like coffee and Matoke (bananas), as a significant driver of local prosperity.Additionally, the stability and peace maintained under NRM leadership have enabled critical infrastructure projects, such as the construction of roads, schools, and churches, which have greatly improved the district’s quality of life.
Youth-centered programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and the Youth Livelihood Programme have also played an essential role in creating economic opportunities for young people.
These initiatives, Nkesiga noted, have allowed youth to engage in Uganda’s expanding “money economy,” contributing to their continued support for the ruling party.
Nkesiga’s leadership in the district exemplifies the NRM’s broader strategy of youth empowerment. As the youngest NRM chairperson in Kiruhura, Nkesiga has shown that young people are capable of leading political change, with Museveni trusting him to uphold the party’s ideology and lead the district.
“We are seeing how youth can contribute to and lead political agendas,” Nkesiga said. “The President’s commitment to youth empowerment is evident in the trust he has placed in the next generation to continue his work and bring about the next phase of political and social change in Uganda.”
For local leaders like Kajwengye, this victory is seen as a testament to the fact that when young leaders are given the right opportunities, they can foster positive political and social change in Uganda.
Kiruhura’s success serves as a model for other regions in Uganda, demonstrating how grassroots engagement and youth leadership can drive both political and economic progress.
The district’s victory, led by youthful leaders and backed by strategic government policies, shows the potential of Uganda’s emerging generation of leaders.
