Africa-Press – Uganda. Hundreds of people on Monday gathered at St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral for special prayers to mark the 71st birthday of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
The celebrations, held in a worship setting in line with the Kabaka’s long-standing tradition, drew believers from across Buganda, reflecting on his leadership and legacy.
Delivering the sermon, Bishop Silvesto Kisitu of the Eastern Region urged the people of Buganda to emulate the Kabaka’s example, noting that the occasion goes beyond marking age.
“It is not just about celebrating 71 years in numbers, but what the Kabaka has achieved,” he said. “He has brought peace, love, and unity to his people, as well as initiated projects that benefit them.”
Bishop Kisitu described Kabaka Mutebi’s life as a blessing to Buganda, highlighting his commitment to ensuring that his birthday is consistently marked through prayer across different religious denominations.
“Where we stand today is a result of Buganda giving us land. When the Kabaka’s birthday is celebrated across all religious sects, it shows that he honours God,” he said.
He also cautioned Ugandans against undermining their cultural values, urging communities to embrace tradition.
“Satan is different from norms, tradition, and culture. Even God knows that. Our norms should not be demonised. Let us embrace our traditions,” he said.
The bishop further pointed to the growing cost of living as a concern affecting many Ugandans, noting that rising prices continue to put pressure on households.
He observed that once prices increase, they rarely come down, making it harder for ordinary citizens to cope.
The prayers form part of broader celebrations across Buganda to honour the Kabaka’s life and leadership.
