Africa-Press – Uganda. Lira based journalist has issued a formal demand for retraction, apology, and compensation totaling Shs 155 million after allegedly being defamed in multiple WhatsApp groups over a news article about a disputed family estate.
Emmy Milton Akwam, Managing Editor of tndNews, through his legal representatives M/S Okanyum, Namusana & Co. Advocates, accuses Eng. Joseph Odongo Bongonyinge and Janet Atim Bongonyinge of falsely claiming he was bribed to publish a story on April 12, 2025.
The article, which focused on alleged mismanagement of the late Pulkeria Bongonyinge’s estate, reportedly drew from information provided by the Bongonyinge family members.
In a demand notice dated April 29, Akwam’s lawyers claim the two defendants made defamatory statements on public WhatsApp groups such as Lango Development Agenda, Dwon Lango, and Lango Global Network.
These posts allegedly stated Akwam received Shs 450,000 to “tarnish someone’s image online.”
“The statements have lowered our client’s reputation before right-thinking members of society and caused him psychological pain, emotional torture, and mental anguish,” stated Advocate Anyango Winnie in the letter.
The law firm demands an immediate retraction of the statements, a formal apology posted across all platforms where the claims were made, and Shs 150 million in general damages. An additional Shs 5 million is being sought as legal fees.
The notice warns that if the demands are not met within seven days, legal proceedings will be initiated.
The accused parties, as of this report, have not issued a public response.
