Africa-Press – Uganda. Security authorities in Kabale district have demolished kiosks at the main gate of Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, citing security threats and poor sanitation around the health facility.
Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Nyakahuma said the operation followed persistent complaints from hospital management.
“The kiosks were being used as hideouts for criminals, selling alcohol to patient attendants, storing stolen medicine, and causing congestion at the hospital gate,” Nyakahuma stated.
He added that the structures lacked basic sanitation facilities such as toilets, posing a health risk to hospital users and staff.
However, the vendors have disputed the claims, insisting they had installed a three-stance pit latrine and urinals.
More than 100 affected traders condemned the move, calling it abrupt and unjust.
Joyce Mbaziira and Martin Mugabe, who have operated businesses at the site since 1994, said they possess valid trading licences and view the directive as a deliberate attempt to destroy their livelihoods.
The demolition has sparked debate over the balance between public health and the economic survival of small traders operating near government institutions.
