Africa-Press – Uganda. Kabale Municipality MP Nicholas Theodorus Kamara has urged Ugandans to contribute more to charitable organisations like Caritas, warning that continued reliance on foreign aid threatens the sustainability of key social initiatives.
Kamara made the call while speaking at the climax of the 15th National Caritas Week Celebrations held at Our Lady of Good Shepherd Cathedral on Rushoroza Hill.
The special mass was presided over by Rt Rev Callist Rubaramira, the bishop of Kabale Diocese.
Highlighting the risk posed by diminishing international support, Kamara called on Christians to take ownership of poverty alleviation efforts by actively participating in government schemes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), and the Youth Livelihood Programme.
“I want to encourage Christians to actively participate in government poverty alleviation programs such as the Parish Development Model, Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme, and the Youth Livelihood Programme,” Kamara said.
He added that embracing these initiatives is crucial to empowering communities and ending poverty.
The event drew several dignitaries, including the State Minister of Finance, Henry Musasizi, and Ndorwa East MP Wilfred Niwagaba.
Echoing Kamara’s sentiments, Niwagaba voiced concern over the future of Caritas and similar organisations, noting that tightening foreign aid restrictions have created uncertainty about their long-term viability.
Caritas has for years played a critical role in humanitarian and development work across Uganda, with support from both local and international donors.
However, shifting global priorities and reduced external funding have prompted fresh appeals for domestic backing.
