Africa-Press – Uganda. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged married couples to focus on simple, everyday virtues rather than material wealth, emphasizing that true happiness in marriage is built through small but meaningful acts of love and respect between partners.
Mayiga made these remarks at St. Francis Chapel, Makerere University on Saturday, where he was the chief guest at the holy matrimony of Constance Nagawa Ssentongo and Calvin Atuhairwe, a ceremony presided over by the Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, Rt. Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni.
The Katikkiro cautioned couples against measuring marital success by expensive cars or large houses, noting that such possessions do not guarantee happiness.
Instead, he stressed that the foundation of a strong and joyful marriage lies in faithfulness, humility, mutual understanding, patience, and respect between spouses.
“Marriage does not depend on big things. Big things are good, yes, but it is the small virtues we must invest in. A peaceful heart brings love. Therefore, couples should prioritize the small acts; the bigger things will come in time,” Mayiga said.
He also commended the parents of the bride and groom for raising and guiding their children well, particularly Dr. Collins Ssentongo, the bride’s father, whom he praised as a loyal servant of the Kabaka and a person with deep love for humanity.
In his sermon, Bishop Twinomujuni reminded the newlyweds that marriage is a journey and partnership requiring commitment and cooperation. He emphasized that marriage is a divine calling and encouraged the couple to seek God’s guidance, especially during challenging times.
Twinomujuni advised the couple to take pride in one another while acknowledging their individual personalities. He urged them to communicate openly, listen attentively, and work toward mutual agreement during misunderstandings.
He further reminded them that no one is perfect, and that mistakes are inevitable.
He encouraged the couple to practice patience, forgiveness, and tolerance, stressing that these values are essential for a lasting and stable marriage.
The wedding ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Prince David Kintu Wasajja, Buganda Kingdom Minister for the Cabinet and Chief Whip of the Buganda Lukiiko, Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, as well as relatives and friends of the couple.
