Katikkiro Praises Lugazi Diocese for Promoting Hard Work and Self-Reliance

Africa-Press – Uganda. Thousands of Roman Catholic faithful braved the Easter rain to gather at Queen Mary of Peace Cathedral in Lugazi Municipality, where Bishop Christopher Kakooza led Mass with a call for spiritual renewal and deeper reflection on the meaning of Christ’s resurrection.

Bishop Kakooza reminded the congregation that Easter is a time to reassess one’s life and faith.

“The 40 days of Lent help us prepare for Easter by examining our conscience and renewing our commitment to Christ,” he said.

He described the resurrection as the pillar of Christian belief, strengthening the resolve of the faithful in the face of life’s challenges.

Rev Fr Ignatius Kibowa, the cathedral administrator, used the occasion to thank the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, for his consistent support and partnership with Lugazi Diocese.

He cited the Diocese’s participation in the Buganda Kingdom’s Emwanyi Terimba initiative—which promotes coffee growing—as an example of how spiritual and economic empowerment can go hand in hand.

“Our partnership with the Kingdom has not only uplifted spiritual life but also improved livelihoods. We are committed to encouraging our faithful to participate in meaningful economic activities,” Fr Kibowa said.

Vincent Matovu, Kyaggwe County Chief, applauded the unity between Lugazi Diocese and the Kingdom’s local leadership but raised concerns about rising political tensions at the grassroots.

He warned that divisions could slow down the region’s development and urged residents to prioritise harmony.

Katikkiro Mayiga, who was the guest of honour, commended the diocese for promoting both faith and productivity among believers.

He said the Diocese was advancing what he termed a “gospel of prosperity,” one rooted not in materialism but in hard work and social transformation.

“The gospel of prosperity is one that encourages people to work, to be productive, and to transform their communities,” Mayiga told the congregation.

He stressed the importance of unity, warning that disunity provides room for opportunism and manipulation.

“When we are divided, we lose focus and risk being manipulated by self-centred individuals,” he said.

Mayiga reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to development through its five-point programme and urged subjects of the Kabaka to stay the course, work together, and avoid distractions that could undermine collective progress.
